Each ml contains 200mg Pentobarbital Sodium.
Pentonil is intended for rapid, humane euthanasia in small animals. Intravenous administration typically results in prompt loss of consciousness, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest. Proper IV technique is essential to ensure rapid, smooth, and relatively painless death.
- Pentonil must be administered only by authorised veterinarians.
- Cats/Dogs: 0.7 ml/kg; intravenous (IV) administration is the preferred route for euthanasia.
- If IV access is not possible, intraperitoneal injection may be used.
- Do not dilute Pentonil with any other fluid.
- Sedation with xylazine or acepromazine may be necessary for painful or distressed animals.
Client Guidance
- Clients should be informed that agonal breathing, muscle twitching, elimination of bodily fluids, or eyes remaining open may occur after loss of consciousness.
Verification of Death
Death can be confirmed by:
- Absence of respirations and heart sounds
- Grey mucous membranes
- Fixed and dilated pupils
- Onset of rigor mortis
Carcass Disposal
- Euthanised animals must be disposed of properly in accordance with local laws and regulations to prevent toxicity to scavenging animals.
- Handle filled syringes with care and dispose of used injection equipment safely.
- Avoid accidental injection or contact with open wounds.
- In animals with cardiac deficiencies, death may be delayed if the injection is administered perivascularly.
- Minor muscle twitching or reflex movements may occur after injection; however, an unconscious animal does not feel pain or distress.
